Duped OFWs resort to eating lizards Filipinos working in a cement and asphalt factory in Kuwait have not received a single cent for months. In desperation, they have resorted to eating "bayawak" or monitor lizards to survive.
Thirty-nine overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) employed in Medco, a factory based in the middle of the Kabd dessert in Kuwait, have been complaining that they have not received their salaries for three months. Eduardo Canero, a trailer driver, said that they are starving because of the delay.
Another worker, welder Richard Maceda, noted that someone lends them money for their daily necessities, but most of the time, they depend on catching fish and monitor lizards in the desert for sustenance.
Kapit patalim na po kami [dito]," he said.
False promises
The workers are blaming Non-Stop Manpower Recruitment Agency, saying they were misled into accepting the job. The recruitment agency allegedly promised them free accommodations and plane tickets.
Ang sabi, free accommodation at back and forth ticket. The group was also surprised to find out that their housing would be at the middle of the desert.
Maceda recalled that when one of their co-workers encountered an accident, it took them three hours to cross the desert to the hospital, and they were not even provided their own transport service. When Maceda encountered an accident, he did not receive medical insurance. Furthermore, majority of their residence visas have already lapsed and need to be renewed.
No action?
The group brought their situation to the attention of Labor Attache Josephus Jimenez, who told them that the embassy has not received any complaint from the group.
Edgar Basilio, another worker, told the labor attache that they have already filed three complaints with the embassy but no action has been taken. Jimenez promised the group that he would talk to the company to solve the plight of the Filipino laborers involved.

Ngayon this agency notified me through call na may interview sila this Dec. 7, 2009 for nurses bound for kuwait and Dec. 8 - 10 raw ang interview. Napaka weird kasi two times akong tinawagan. Di professional ang pag kausap sa ken na dapat pupunta daw ako on that day for interview. Actually I have applied to this agency nung Nov. 2008 pero di na ako tumuloy sa interview na hapon tsaka gabi di pa tapos. I'm not sure if reliable pa tong agency na to.
